ABSTRACT

In the present work,a chemically modified electrode has been fabricated utilizing Bi2O3/ZnO nano-composite.The nanocomposite was synthesized by simple sonochemical method and characterized for its structural and morphological properties by using XRD,FESEM,EDAX,HRTEM and XPS techniques.The results clearly indicated co-existence of Bi2O3 and ZnO in the nanocomposite with chemical interaction between them.Bi2O3/ZnO nanocomposite based glassy carbon electrode(GCE)was utilized for sensitive voltammetric detection of an anti-biotic drug(balofloxacin).The modification amplified the electroactive surface area of the sensor,thus providing more sites for oxidation of analyte.Cyclic and square wave voltammograms revealed that Bi2O3/ZnO modified electrode provides excellent electrocatalytic action towards balofloxacin oxidation.The current exhibited a wide linear response in concentration range of 150-1000 nM and detection limit of 40.5 nM was attained.The modified electrode offered advantages in terms of simplicity of preparation,fair stability(RSD 1.45%),appreciable reproducibility(RSD 2.03%)and selectivity.The proposed sensor was applied for determining balofloxacin in commercial pharmaceutical formulations and blood serum samples with the mean recoveries of 99.09%and 99.5%,respectively.

ABSTRACT

The present study reports voltammetric reduction of nitazoxanide in Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry at glassy carbon electrode. A versatile fully validated voltammetric method for quantitative determination of nitazoxanide in pharmaceutical formulation has been proposed. A squrewave peak current was linear over the nitazoxanide concentration in the range of 20-140 mg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) was calculated to be 5.23μg/mL and 17.45μg/mL, respectively.

ABSTRACT

A 29-year-old lady receiving repeated blood transfusions for β thalassemia since childhood, presented with rapidly deteriorating symptoms of night blindness and peripheral visual field loss. She was recently commenced on high-dose intravenous desferrioxamine for reducing the systemic iron overload. Clinical and investigative findings were consistent with desferrioxamine-related pigmentary retinopathy and optic neuropathy. Recovery was partial following cessation of desferrioxamine. This report highlights the ocular side-effects of desferrioxamine mesylate and the need to be vigilant in patients on high doses of desferrioxamine.

ABSTRACT

Redox behavior of midazolam was studied at a glassy carbon electrode in various buffer systems,supporting electrolytes and pH using differential paise,square-wave and cyclic voltammetry.Based on its reduction behavior,a direct differential pulse voltammetric method has been developed and validated for the determination of midazolam in parenteral dosage.Three welldefined peaks were observed in 0.1% SLS,Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer of pH 2.5.The effect of surfaetants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS),cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and Tween 20 was studied.Among these surfactants SLS showed significant enhancement in reduction peak.The cathodic peak currents were directly proportional to the concentration of midazolam with correlation coetfficient of 0.99.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who presented two days after blunt trauma to the left eye with a slingshot. On examination his best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 in the right eye and 20/400 in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination of the left eye revealed a Vossius ring, traumatic cataract, traumatic posterior capsule tear (PCT). The contour of the posterior capsule bulge corresponded to the edges of the PCT. Rotating Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam 70700:Oculus, Wetzlar Germany) confirmed the traumatic cataract in the region of the PCT visualized as increased lens density at the cortex-vitreous interface. The extent of the PCT in the greatest and least dimensions was documented before and after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Intra-operatively, the PCT was evident and phaco-emulsification with an IOL implant was performed. Postoperatively, his BCVA improved to 20/20 in the left eye with a well-centered in-the-bag IOL as found on slit-lamp and Scheimpflug images.

ABSTRACT

Sutureless vitrectomy has rapidly been accepted as an essential part of a vitreoretinal surgical setup. The size and structure of the wound along with near intact conjunctival covering makes the incision self-sealing and safe. This allows the vitrectomy instruments to be used without creating an initial limited peritomy to expose bare sclera, and obviates the need for sutures at the end of the procedure. Wound construction is the essential step in ensuring postoperative wound stability. Both one-step and two-step wound constructions have been described. Key points include an oblique, tunneled approach to ensure a valve-like effect as well as misalignment of conjunctival and scleral wounds by displacing conjunctiva during construction. Advantages include decreased operative times in certain cases and decreased postoperative inflammation, early postoperative rehabilitation, improved patient comfort, and minimal conjunctival damage. Complications are based around wound competence, hypotony, and its relationship to endophthalmitis rates. Early reports highlighted an increase in endophthalmitis though further studies are required to accurately assess the incidence. Endophthalmitis has not been reported in cases that underwent fluid/air exchange. This review focuses on techniques, benefits, complications, personal experiences, and the safety profiles of sutureless vitrectomy systems. A literature review was undertaken using 'Medline' and 'Pubmed'. Search terms included sutureless vitrectomy, 20 gauge, 23 gauge, 25 gauge, and transconjunctival and small gauge vitrectomy.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the coefficient of repeatability (CR) for corneal parameters evaluated with Pentacam after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in myopic eyes. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective, non-interventional, non-comparative study in an institutional setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty eyes of 40 consecutive subjects who had undergone LASIK for myopia were assessed with the Scheimpflug system (Pentacam 70700: Oculus, Wetzlar Germany). The mean of five consecutive measurements of all the corneal parameters was recorded and CR was calculated as standard deviation of the difference from the mean of these repeat measurements divided by the mean response. The statistical significance of the CR was calculated for these parameters at 5% significance level. RESULTS: The best CR was observed for the periphery of the anterior corneal curvature (0.18%) and the least for the horizontal meridian of the posterior corneal curvature (1.29%). Despite being significantly different ( P < 0.001), both the measurements were highly repeatable in post-LASIK eyes. The central, apical and minimal corneal thickness had a CR of 1%, 0.78% and 0.77% respectively. These were equally repeatable ( P> 0.323). The CR of the mean radius of curvature of the anterior cornea (0.29%) was significantly better ( P < 0.001) than the posterior corneal curvature (0.57%). CONCLUSION: The CR for the post-LASIK cornea with Pentacam was the best for the anterior corneal curvature. Significantly, Pentacam has a high degree of repeatability for the posterior corneal curvature, which has a potential for early detection of keratectasia in these eyes. Post-LASIK pachymetry with Pentacam also showed excellent repeatability.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the ultrasound biomicroscopic measurement of the anterior chamber angle in Asian Indian eyes, with the angle width estimated by gonioscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants: Patients with open and closed angles attending a glaucoma clinic were recruited for the study. OBSERVATION PROCEDURES: Temporal quadrants of the angles of patients were categorized by gonioscopy as Grade 0 to Grade 4, using Shaffer's classification. These angles were quantified by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) using the following biometric characteristics: Angle opening distance at 250 micro (AOD 250) and 500 micro (AOD 500) from the scleral spur and trabecular meshwork-ciliary process distance (TCPD). The angles were further segregated as "narrow angles" (Schaffer's Grade 2 or less) and "open angles" (Schaffer's Grade 3 and 4). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The UBM measurements were computed in each case and analyzed in relation to the gonioscopic angle evaluation. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty three eyes of 163 patients were analyzed. One hundred and six eyes had "narrow angles" and 57 eyes had "open angles" on gonioscopy. There was a significant difference among the mean UBM measurements of each angle grade estimated by gonioscopy (P < 0.001). The Pearson correlation coefficient between all UBM parameters and gonioscopy grades was significant at the 0.01 level. The mean AOD 250, AOD 500 and TCPD in narrow angles were 58+/-49 micro, 102+/-84 micro and 653+/-124 respectively, while it was 176+/-47 micro, 291+/-62 micro and 883+/-94 micro in eyes with open angles (P < 0.001) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The angle width estimated by gonioscopy correlated significantly with the angle dimensions measured by UBM. Gonioscopy, though a subjective test, is a reliable method for estimation of the angle width.

ABSTRACT

Two patients presented with hemobilia, one and two months following cholecystectomy. Angiography demonstrated pseudoaneurysms arising form the gastroduodenal and right hepatic arteries. Percutaneous transcatheter embolization of the pseudoaneurysms was successfully performed in both patients using homemade steel coils.
